Inclement Weather Reminder

CHENEY, Washington - During inclement weather this winter, or during emergency situations, please remember the various methods the university utilizes to communicate the status of campus operations.

First, you are encouraged to sign up for the EWU Alert system to receive immediate EWU announcements via text message, email and more. Messages will typically be updated if there is a change to normal operations during a major weather event or other emergency, or when the university is returning to normal operations.

Information can also be obtained through our social media channels such as Twitter (@EWUNews or @EWUEagles) and Facebook, or by visiting either the EWU homepage or the EWU Emergency page. You can also access status updates on the EWU Snow Line at 359.7669 (359.SNOW).

Please keep in mind that while Eastern rarely cancels classes it does not compromise safety when making a decision about school closures during a weather event. Prior to making a decision on operations, EWU consults with the following agencies about road conditions and tries to make a decision no later than 5 a.m. each day: the Washington State Patrol, the Weather Service, the City of Cheney, Spokane Transit and EWU Police. The university's own facilities staff is also consulted regarding sidewalk and parking lot conditions.

Each individual (students/faculty/staff) should make their own decision on whether to come in or stay home based on their situation and personal safety.

As per Eastern's Suspended Operations policy, if an employee requests to leave or not report to work because he/she has concerns regarding the weather or driving conditions, the employee must take vacation leave, compensatory time, if applicable, or leave without pay. Remember, all Eastern employees and students can ride STA buses for free with their EWU I.D. card.

When operations are suspended remember the following:

  • When the main EWU campus is closed, so is EWU Spokane (this does not apply to locations/programs in other parts of the state)
  • Only essential personnel report to work (those tasked with cleanup/maintenance)
  • Dining Services locations will be open based on available staff
  • Library is closed

Lastly, it is also worth noting the city of Cheney's snow removal plans. If you park on the street, please remember you will need to move your vehicle if there's a heavy snowfall. Moving your vehicle for plowing speeds up the process to make the streets clear and safe for everyone.
