Successful Stuttering Workshop

CHENEY, Washington - Eastern Washington University will once again host an intensive summer workshop for people working to manage a stuttering disorder, July 10-23, at the University Hearing and Speech Clinic on the EWU Spokane Campus.

Developed and utilized for more than 35 years at Eastern, the Successful Stuttering Management Program (SSMP) has helped hundreds of clients learn the tools needed to gain control and confidence in their daily interactions with others. This year, eight individuals who stutter (adolescents and young adults) will participate in the program, with one coming all the way from New York. There will also be 16 student clinicians and three former workshop participants involved in the training.

The therapy includes both group and individual work to meet the specific needs of each person. The program does not advocate for a cure, but rather it is designed to assist the stutterer in managing the stuttering, the elimination of word and situation fears, and developing improved attitude and self-image.

SSMP has also provided hands-on experience in stuttering therapy for over 1,000 student clinicians and in-service training for professional speech-language pathologists.
